Darren
Hayes' new single Popular is officially
released today. It's been a long hard road
for
Hayes after his first album, Spin,
failed to
match high expectations generated
by the
massive success of Queensland's
most
successful export: Savage Garden.
But,
undaunted, Darren set about
changing his
style and direction, penning his
own tunes
and working with more innovative
producers.
After what seemed like an eternity
for
Darren Hayes fans, the man himself
treated
his loyal devotees to special
listening
parties earlier
this year; and in a move that
would normally
horrify labels and management,
Hayes visited
the listening parties in person,
meeting and greeting fans as his new
album
was previewed. Now, with an
increased
interest in the new material, it
will be
interesting to monitor the success
of
Darren's 2nd solo campaign;
especially
since the U.S. arm of Sony
decided, in
their infinite
money-squandering wisdom,
that they would
delay any American release
of
the new material. I know there are plenty
of
intelligent people in America; it would
be
great if they could make a few
decisions
instead of the out-of-touch fools
that
head the major labels...oh, and
the
government. Darren Hayes titles
will
always be available on
Whammo,
both versions
of the new Popular single.
