Dawny - Indianapolis LP, 17 April 2004
It was a beautiful Saturday morning in Indianapolis, Indiana. The drive to The Lodge Recording Studio was nice. As I pulled into the gravel parking lot, there were already 20 or so people there, talking, getting to know one another. I got out of my rental car and commenced talking to the people standing around, getting their names, finding the people who I have come to know and love on the net. Around 11:30, I suppose, we were individually searched by an Indianapolis officer and let into the building. We picked up our nametags, which Tara designed and signed a special poster for Darren. Then headed on up the stairs of this architectually spectacular building built by very talented Masons. The columns were beautiful, the light fixtures amazing, the atmosphere just fitting for the event we were about to witness. As the room filled, Cindy came in and talked to us a bit and we had fun mingling and taking a quiz on everything Darren. After that was over, Leonie came in and talked a bit before putting on some amazing music, by none other than Darren Hayes.
As "The Tension & The Spark" began, I became mesmerized. As Track One began, I was taken deep inside Darren's soul. It was apparent; he was pouring his heart out for everyone to see. Track Two flowed right out of the first and in my chair I commenced to dance. As Track Three began, we came out of the deeper crevasses of Darren's soul and into a more uplifting, happy place. Track Four, set to be the first release, brought us to a sarcastically funny side of Darren that is rarely seen. Track Five was another dive into the depths of his soul. He revealed true pain and fear. Track Six has a great beat and is basically about not wanting to be put on a pedestal for everyone to worship. Track Seven is about a longing to be accepted and loved unconditionally. Being good enough again so to speak. Track Eight is about emptiness and a possible longing to replace a lost love. Track Nine is about coming to terms with the bad things that have happened in your life. Accepting and moving on. Track Ten is deals with moving on with your life and letting go of the past. Track Eleven is very electronica. A great beat and a song about the spark between two people. Track Twelve is a song only the quick witted Mr. Hayes could write. Let's just say, you'll have to hear this one to understand what I'm referring to. And lastly, Track Thirteen in my opinion is about a man letting go of a personality that is really not all his. It's a cute song, makes you smile because you know what he is referring to yet at the same time, you see the struggle to let "it" go. This album is a true piece of art; enigmatic and totally honest.
It was a little disappointing when the music was over; knowing it would be months before we would be able to hear it again. That album had me totally mesmerized the whole time it played. This is possibly his ticket to megastardom as some articles have said. And as Leonie said, "this will hopefully be the album that makes him the celebrity he needs to be." She said she has never worked with anyone else that has the raw writing ability that Darren has. She says she is constantly amazed when she reads his lyrics. He is indeed a brilliant singer/songwriter and hopefully the world will realize this now.
After the album was finished, we discussed ways to help promote this new endeavor, dance radio, college radio to start then hopefully moving over to Top 40. Darren will be relocating to the UK during this process of promotion and hopefully when it hits the US, they will be back.
Then it happened, Darren arrived. He was dressed beautifully in a black jacket and pants with a paisley type print black and beige looking shirt. He was very gracious and humble. He answered many questions, made reference to the fact he will never do a Prince cover now, since he learned Prince really hates people covering his music, lol. He referred to the "Spin" flop in the States as "cutting up cheese". There are alot of other things that were discussed, but if I put it all down, it would take days to read. We then lined up and took pictures with Darren and gave him gifts if we had any. As I walked up to Darren, I proceeded to tell him that "I come bearing gifts " and handed him a squeaky toy for Wally and the scrapbook of the bday wishes and Wally songs I put together for him. He then says to everyone after squeaking the toy "this woman knows how to treat me" he turns around and clears a spot off for his "gifts" and says, "have your gifts ready I'll put them here". He is so hilarious, I thought I was going to wet myself. Then we hugged for what seemed like minutes. He just makes you feel so comfortable. He is such a sweet man, very grounded and when you meet him, it's like meeting a good friend you've missed.
After leaving the room, I left the building wishing I could relive the whole experience over and over again. Wishing somehow I could've bottled it up and relived it whenever I felt the need. Or put the whole scene in a snowglobe to gaze upon fondly. This was the best weekend of my entire life and I have Darren Hayes-z for letting me into his world if only for a brief moment in time. Thank you Darren!
